In this strength training video, personal trainer Dave Patania gives us some strength training exercises we can do at home, as recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine. (www.acsm.org)

Dave starts off with a few exercises you can do using you own body weight for resistance.

First up is the Genie Squat. This is a great exercise for strengthening the leg muscles. By doing strength training exercises that use the body’s big muscles, you will also be burning lots of calories.

Next are Push Ups. This is an awesome exercise for strengthening the upper body, in particular the chest and arms. If you are unable to do a full push up, then start of by either doing a half push up (on your knees) or by doing a push up against a bench.

This is a good way to slowly build up your strength.

Sit ups are an important part of any strength training program. As well as helping to develop a flatter stomach, they will also help you increase your core strength and stability.

The final 2 exercise require the use of dumbbells and resistance tubing.

The bicep curl using dumbbells will help develop upper arm strength and is a good compliment to the earlier Push Ups.

Using the resistance tubing in a standing row position will allow you to strengthen the muscles of the back and shoulders.

As you can see, you don’t need to visit a gym, or have an expensive home gym to be able to participate in an effective strength training program.
